Lyon County Release Meanings
A Lyon County jail release is the point when detention staff process a person out of the Lyon County Detention Center. It may follow bond, time served, a court order, dismissal-related action, or placement on probation. Yet “released” does not always mean free from all custody. A transport to the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), another jail, federal authorities, or immigration authorities ends the local jail stay but starts or continues custody elsewhere. The county release entry and the court case must be read together to tell those events apart.
The Lyon County Detention Center is the county’s only verified adult detention facility that calls for its own page. It holds people in felony and misdemeanor matters and handles booking, identification, property, release paperwork, and court or KDOC transports. Once detention staff process a person out, a live-custody result may change or disappear. The administrative booking and release transaction remains the best source for the physical event. Court records explain the legal authority, while KASPER preserves the status of people who enter Kansas state corrections.
- Bond
- A court-authorized release while the criminal case remains open.
- Time served
- Release after the ordered custody term or credited time has been satisfied.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision in the community, often instead of more jail time.
- Parole
- Community release for an eligible person under Kansas’s older indeterminate-sentence rules.
- Discharge
- Completion of the sentence or supervision obligation, not merely leaving a jail or prison building.
Lyon County Release Paths
The next reliable record depends on the release path. A bond order can explain why a person should be released, but it does not prove the exact time detention staff completed processing. A transfer record proves departure from the county facility, but not a return to the community. These distinctions matter when relatives, counsel, or other authorized contacts are trying to confirm where a person went.
| Release or departure | What it means | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court order | The case continues outside the jail unless later resolved. | Jail release entry plus district or municipal court order |
| Time served | The local custody term was completed or credited. | Release transaction and sentencing journal entry |
| Probation | The court placed the person under community supervision. | Court docket and supervising court or community corrections office |
| KDOC transfer | The person left the county jail but remains in state custody. | KASPER movement, location, and sentence record |
| Federal or ICE transfer | Another sovereign may now hold the person. | BOP, federal docket, USMS routing, or ICE locator |
Lyon County Release Record Fields
A focused request asks for an existing booking or release record, not an agency-created explanation. Lyon County does not publish a verified online release archive or a fixed public field list. The county research supports asking whether the following fields exist in the booking sheet, booking/release log entry, or related administrative record. A custodian may redact exempt material or explain that a requested field is not maintained.
| Requested field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Full name and booking identifier | Connects the release to the correct custody event. |
| Booking date and time | Defines the start of the local detention record. |
| Date and time processed out | Documents when county staff completed the departure transaction. |
| Public release disposition | May distinguish bond, time served, court order, or transfer. |
| Receiving agency or destination category | May identify continued custody when the public record contains it. |
| Booking photograph | Identifies the image tied to that county booking, if releasable. |
No published local online retention period was found. That gap should stay clear. The absence of a person from VINE or a sheriff custody page does not show that the underlying booking/release record was destroyed. Ask the Lyon County Sheriff’s records custodian which retention schedule applies to the specific record and whether an electronic copy is available.
Request Lyon County Release Records
Lyon County provides an official Open Records Request Form. Direct a detention request to the sheriff’s records custodian and describe the person, approximate booking range, facility, and exact existing records sought. Separate the administrative booking/release entry from a broad investigative file. That narrow scope helps the custodian locate releasable custody facts while applying required protections to juvenile, victim, medical, security, and investigative information.
- Identify the full name, approximate booking date, and Lyon County Detention Center as the facility.
- Ask for the booking sheet, booking/release log entry, processed-out date and time, public disposition, and public destination field if a transfer occurred.
- Request an electronic copy and an advance itemized fee estimate. The sheriff’s $5 accident or incident report fee is not a verified flat release-record fee.
- If records are withheld, ask for the statutory basis and any segregable, nonexempt portion of the record.
- For the legal authority behind release, obtain the court order or journal entry from the correct court clerk.

The current sheriff contact page is the best place to verify the request route before sending records or visiting. The screenshot below reflects that official contact source. It ties the release-record request to the county office that created or maintains the detention transaction.
Use the live county page if an older directory lists a different phone number or capacity. Current first-party details should control.
Lyon County Release Record Law
The Kansas Open Records Act, K.S.A. 45-215 through 45-223, favors access to agency records unless another law permits or requires closure. It gives access to records the agency keeps. It does not force Lyon County to research a question, create a custom report, or build a rolling release list that does not exist.
K.S.A. 45-218 governs request and inspection procedure. When a record cannot be produced at once, the agency must provide access or a detailed explanation of the delay and the earliest availability within three business days. That is not a promise that every record will be delivered in three days. K.S.A. 45-219 allows lawful access, copying, and staff-time fees. K.S.A. 45-221 lists records that an agency is not required to disclose.
Expungement is a court process that changes public access after relief is granted. K.S.A. 21-6614 addresses eligible convictions, while K.S.A. 22-2410 addresses arrest records. Waiting periods and exclusions vary. Passage of time alone does not produce an order. KDOC says a KASPER name is removed when the conviction is expunged, overturned on appeal, or subject to executive clemency. Sealed, expunged, juvenile, and other protected records may therefore be absent from public searches even though a past custody event occurred.
Lyon County Release Processing
The official Lyon County Detention Center page says detention staff process booking and release paperwork, property, and identification. It does not publish a set release hour, exit door, weekend schedule, family waiting area, or transport plan. For same-day logistics, call 620-341-3205 and ask a narrow question about the current public status and any public instructions. Do not assume a morning, midnight, or court-closing release pattern.
Property and identification issues also follow the agency that holds the relevant record. A suspected error in a jail release entry or county booking photo goes to the sheriff’s records custodian. A KASPER status or corrections-image concern goes to KDOC. A qualifying registered-offender record issue goes through the KBI correction channel. Matching the correction request to the record owner avoids asking one agency to change another agency’s data.
Lyon County Bond Release Courts
A bond release ends physical custody while the criminal case stays active. Lyon County is part of the Fifth Judicial District, and state-law felony and misdemeanor cases proceed in district court. Emporia ordinance cases use Emporia Municipal Court. A person booked at the same jail can therefore have a legal record in either court, and multiple holds can require more than one case search.
Use the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal for a Lyon County district case. Review the register of actions for bond, disposition, sentence, probation, revocation, and later completion entries. A docket label can be brief, so request the journal entry when the legal basis matters. For city-ordinance matters, use Emporia Municipal Court. The court record explains authority; the jail transaction proves the processed-out time.
Find Lyon County Released Inmates
Lyon County has no verified sheriff-hosted 24-hour, 72-hour, or historical release feed. The official detention page routes inmate searches to Kansas VINE, while the sheriff inmate page warns that a person may have been transferred or released. A complete lookup follows the custody trail instead of stopping at the first blank result.
- Search the person in Kansas VINE and compare the reporting agency and identifiers. Save the exact status and update time.
- Call the detention center when the person disappears or the status is unclear. Ask whether the person remains there and whether the public disposition was release or transfer.
- Request the booking/release entry for the authoritative county transaction. For a date-bounded list, request existing log entries between exact timestamps.
- Search the correct court for bond, dismissal, sentence, probation, revocation, or disposition records.
- Use KASPER if KDOC involvement is possible. Use BOP for a federal sentence and ICE only to test current immigration detention.
The 24-Hour Release List and 72-Hour Release List pages explain the county’s no-feed fallback for those exact windows. They do not substitute current inmates for released people.
KASPER Lyon County Release Search
The Kansas Adult Supervised Population Electronic Repository, called KASPER, covers people sentenced to KDOC custody since 1980 who are incarcerated, under post-incarceration supervision, or discharged. It is strong evidence for a state-prison status or sentence history. It is not the archive for someone who only bonded out of Lyon County jail and never entered KDOC custody.
| Search or detail field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| KDOC number | Best unique public search key when known. |
| Name and aliases | Find candidates, then compare more identifiers. |
| Birth and physical details | Help distinguish people with similar names. |
| Conviction county and case | Connect a KDOC sentence to Lyon County, but not current residence. |
| Custody or supervision level | Distinguishes prison, parole, postrelease, conditional release, and discharge. |
| Anticipated release date | A changeable forecast, not proof that release occurred. |
| Movements and parole office | Shows location changes and the office maintaining state supervision. |
KDOC says KASPER updates daily except weekends. Weekend events can lag. “Parole,” “conditional release,” and “postrelease supervision” mean the person left prison but remains under an active sentence. “Discharged” is different. The Projected Release Date page explains why the anticipated date can change.
The official KASPER entry is shown below. The image provides context for the state search, while the live result should control any status check.
Accept the current disclaimer, match more than the name, and record the exact public status before drawing a conclusion.
Lyon County Recent Release Limits
No exact official recent-release feed URL exists in the research. VINE is a one-person custody and notification service, not a permanent county ledger. Its timestamp may reflect agency reporting rather than the legal release time. A blank result cannot distinguish community release, transfer, spelling problems, or a source delay.
For a one-day or three-day range, ask for existing release-log entries bounded by exact start and end times. Request name, booking identifier, processed-out time, and public disposition or destination category if those fields exist. KORA does not generally require the custodian to create a new custom database. If no compiled list is maintained, ask for the existing log entries instead.
Lyon County Post-Release Supervision
KASPER can show parole, conditional release, postrelease supervision, a listed parole office, or discharge for covered KDOC cases. A district-court probation case may not appear as KDOC parole just because the person spent time in county jail. Check the district court journal entry and the applicable court services or community corrections channel. The Parole & Probation page separates these systems and explains the Emporia supervision contacts.
Registration is another distinct system. The KBI Registered Offender Search covers qualifying registered sex, violent, and drug offenders. It is not a general list of Lyon County released inmates and does not prove a release date or parole status. The official search gateway shown below should only be used when registration law applies.
A registry record is a continuing registration source, not a replacement for the jail release entry, court case, or KASPER status.
Lyon County Release Transfer Checks
Kansas VINE supports web, telephone, mobile-app, email, text, and in-app custody notifications. Search a matching person, review the agency and status, and register through the options shown on the live screen. Alerts can lag or fail, so verify a critical event with the jail or later custodian. No Lyon County sheriff-branded release app was verified.
For a federal sentence, use the BOP Inmate Locator. It covers federal inmate records from 1982 forward and can show “Released” with a date. A person held pretrial for the U.S. Marshals may not yet be a sentenced BOP resident. The federal locator screenshot below illustrates the correct federal channel, not a Lyon County feed.
For an immigration transfer, ICE’s locator primarily tests current detention. No result is not proof of immigration release. Follow a credible detainer or transfer through the receiving agency and appropriate ERO contact.
Compare Lyon County Release Sources
Each system answers a different question. Use the source that owns the event, then compare it with a second record when the release reason or destination matters.
| Source | Best use | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Kansas VINE | Current county custody signal and notifications | Not a permanent certified release archive |
| Sheriff release record | Physical Lyon County processed-out event | Requires a request; fields and retention are not posted |
| Court record | Bond, disposition, sentence, or probation authority | Does not prove the exact jail exit time |
| KASPER | KDOC custody, supervision, movement, and discharge | Does not cover every county-jail release |
| BOP or ICE | Federal history or current immigration detention | Not a local county release list |
Lyon County Release Facility
Lyon County Detention Center is the sole verified adult detention facility in the county that warrants a facility page. The sheriff operates it at 425 Mechanic Street in Emporia. Community releases are documented through the jail and related court case. KDOC transfers move into KASPER, while another-agency transfers must be followed through that custodian’s system.
No state prison, BOP institution, dedicated ICE facility, or separately advertised city jail with its own release-record system was verified in Lyon County. That does not mean other authorities can never hold or move a person through the county jail. It means there is no supported basis for inventing another local facility page or release feed.
